This article is aimed at visual designers, but is applicable to any entrepreneurs as well. Tell your story, care about your brand, promote yourself. The simplest things like your own platform, email address, domain name, social networks consistent branding matter. Make yourself a business card, you never know when it will come in handy!
Logo is a must
Logo is a must for an entrepreneur, especially now when a lot of businesses are done through a web. If you have certain product to offer (real product, service, etc) and you are selling it via internet, or in a real shop, or both, you definitely need to think about your visual identity if you don't have one yet. Successful logo and visual identity will qualitatively distinguish you from the other representatives of the market segment.
Thoroughly constructed brand story, I mean general concept of your brand, but a real story behind your brand is a huge plus too, with an effective logo and all the other elements of visual identity will only enhance potential loyalty to you and your brand. It's simple, if you care enough about your business face, about the image that your business creates, if you care about your potential clients experience interacting with you or/and your brand, than you are worth trusting.
It's really simple. It's like outfit you wear to work with clients. You can take a nice custom suit because you want to establish yourself as a serious reliable professional specialist, you don't want to look cheap, you want to sell yourself, your products, and/or services expensive, you want to be better or at least level with others, you want be recognizable after all.
Logo and branding are also a bit like navigation signs. Once you got your audience, customers, clients that are familiar with your brand, logo and visual identity will help them navigates easily and faster to your products on the shelves of a supermarket, to your store in the centre of the city or two blocks from it, to your app on the screen of their mobile devices, or to your website on their laptop screen. And the more unique your visual identity is, the more easier it will be to distinguish your brand and recognize it.
A quick tip: do not underestimate business cards. Although it is digital era we live in, and you can easily send your pdf portfolio with links to all your social accounts, portfolios, credentials, etc to a customer, or employer, still you never know, there are different situations, you might met an interesting person you would like to offer your services to and it would be a great move to present your nice looking business card. It will create a good impression for sure.
Have a strategy for your brand. Think about naming beforehand. Name is as important or even more important than a logo itself. When you decide on the name for your brand think it thoroughly through. Does it represent who you are and what you do? Is it not very difficult to remember? Is it original to a certain level? Most possibly you will create a website so before settling on a certain name check up if the domain is available. Panabee and Wordoid services might be helpful, they are not perfect but good for start, you can always google some more.
Social media for work
One more quick tip: if you are active on different social networks and media, firstly, it is better to have separate accounts for your personal use and your professional use. Secondly, brand your social accounts accordingly. Set avatars, cover and background images with your logos and your visual identity elements. Sproutsocial will help with social media image sizes.
What is also very important is proper naming for your social networks. Give them your brand name or your real name, no firstname.lastname@example.org! Nice names examples are email@example.com (firstname.lastname@example.org) or email@example.com (firstname.lastname@example.org). Same applies to other social networks. It will show that you are professional, that you care, and it'll create consistency through all your accounts.
Marketing and content
Design however is not the basic element in this chain. Marketing is very important as well. If you cannot communicate with clients, if you cannot sell, if you do not understand market, if you do not supply relevant content, logo and visual identity will not make it for you. But if you are a good marketer, effective logo and clever branding will only boost your business.
